What should I know about Braces for my children?

“Prevention is better than cure” is what we truly believe in, especially for your kids. At Kids and Braces Superspeciality Dental clinic our Orthodontist agrees on the importance of seeking an Orthodontic evaluation early.

The Indian and American association of orthodontist recommends that children see an Orthodontist at age seven. At this early age orthodontic treatment may not be necessary but vigilant examination can anticipate the most ideal time to begin the treatment.

Typically early evaluation or treatment prevents future Orthodontic treatment by:

  • Guiding the incoming permanent teeth into proper position thereby reducing the chances of teeth getting stuck in bone
  • Influencing jaw growth to create optimal or ideal facial balance and harmony
  • Reducing the likelihood of teeth extraction or surgery in future
  • Reducing the treatment time and expense or avoiding the treatment completely in future
  • Reducing the duration of retainer wear as early treatment results are more stable

For parents, it’s not always easy to know if your child may need orthodontic treatment. So please Contact us and schedule an orthodontic consultation.

What is the best way to prevent cavities in my child at this age?

At this age your child needs to brush his/her teeth twice daily with Fluoridated toothpaste independently. We can guide you with proper brushing technique that will keep all surfaces of your teeth clean and cavity free. Sometimes supervision of parents is essential. Teach them gargling after every snack or meals.

Sugary and sticky food, for example Chocolate, Biscuits and wafers should be avoided in between meals. You can definitely give them just before meals so that the stickiness goes away with the friction of fibrous food in meals. Frequency of sweets should be decreased.

FLUORIDE TREATMENT: (Protective shield on the teeth)

You are just one step away for prevention of cavities of your child’s teeth for life time. We provide Fluoride treatment to kids from the age of 3 year and every year after it and is highly suggested for all. Results are spectacular and have shown that cavity free children with a healthy mouth are therefore healthy children.

What are DENTAL SEALANTS?

At the age of 6 years, the Permanent first molar erupts, and therefore to prevent cavities in these teeth SEALANTS are applied.

Sealants are a protective coating applied to the chewing surface of teeth. It is worked into the tiny grooves where cavity-causing bacteria live. Toothbrush bristles are too large to reach into the grooves making sealant application one of the most important preventive treatments available. The procedure is effective, painless and quick.

These materials are Fluoride (anti cavity agent) releasing thereby having added benefit.

My child’s lower front Permanent teeth have come behind the milk tooth. Does my child require any treatment?

If your child has a tooth growing behind the milk teeth, don’t panic. Its relatively common occurrence in children, and although it can look scary its easily treatable.

If the milk teeth is loose in front, than your child needs to wiggle it out. If not loose than you need to see us so that we can remove the milk teeth and create enough space for the permanent teeth. Once the baby tooth is out your child’s tongue will naturally push the permanent tooth forward into correct position. This happens only if there is enough space for the permanent teeth. If not please schedule a consultation with our Paediatric Dentist.
